Start with the air coming from the vents
Is there little airflow, or does the air blow strongly but feel warm? The distinction changes what needs checking. Also note whether the problem follows parking in the sun or continues throughout the journey. Saying only that the air conditioning is weak is not enough to choose a repair.
Observations to make before visiting a workshop
- Reduce the cabin heat. Briefly ventilate the car while parked safely, then close the windows and operate the air conditioning as described in the owner's manual. Do not judge its performance in the first few seconds after parking in sunlight.
- Check the settings. Make sure A/C is switched on and the dashboard vents are selected. Try recirculation when cooling, and restore the demisting setting whenever visibility requires it.
- Compare airflow. Notice the differences between fan speeds and between vents. Weak airflow even at a high fan speed warrants checking the air path and cabin filter.
- Record the conditions. Note the time, weather, settings, and whether performance improves during normal driving. Do not leave the car idling for a long time or raise engine speed to create a test.

Weak airflow from the vents
Ask for the cabin filter, blower, and air ducts to be checked. The cabin filter is different from the engine air filter; recharging the refrigerant circuit will not clear an obstructed air path.
Strong airflow, but warm air
A technician needs to assess the refrigerant circuit and its controls, including possible refrigerant loss or a component fault. A single pressure reading or touching a pipe does not, by itself, establish that a recharge is needed.
Cooling weakens while stationary
Record this observation together with engine temperature. A specialist checks heat rejection and fan operation according to the vehicle's design, rather than assuming that every midday cooling problem means low refrigerant.

How can you request a useful service?
Ask for a report explaining the leak-test result, the refrigerant type and specified charge quantity for your car, and what was repaired before recharging. If cooling weakened again soon after a service, bring that invoice. Repeated recharging without an explanation is not a diagnosis.
After a repair, testing should take place under conditions similar to those in which the complaint occurred. No single vent temperature can judge every car in every weather condition. A valid comparison requires the correct test procedure for the model.
Distinguish cabin comfort from engine safety
If poor air conditioning comes with an engine-temperature warning or steam, stop safely and address overheating first. Do not disconnect air-conditioning pipes. In electric and hybrid vehicles, some components may operate at high voltage.
Questions to help you decide
Does an unpleasant smell mean low refrigerant?
Not necessarily. The ventilation system may need cleaning. Tell the technician when the smell occurs rather than automatically requesting a recharge. A fuel smell requires a separate, urgent assessment.
Can I replace the cabin filter myself?
Only if the owner's manual describes safe access and you have the correct filter. Do not break covers or dismantle unfamiliar parts. Ask the technician to show you the filter's condition during service.
