Prevent damage before trying to explain it
Abnormally high temperature deserves serious attention even if the cause seems simple. Do not try to diagnose the fault while continuing to drive. Stopping safely comes before questions about the thermostat, pump, or head gasket.
Temperature warning or steam: stop safely
Stop somewhere safe, switch off the engine, and seek assistance. Do not open a hot radiator or pressurized reservoir cap, or approach steam or rotating parts. A falling gauge after stopping does not prove that driving is safe again.
What should you record instead of dismantling parts?
- Conditions when it appeared: Traffic, highway driving, a climb, a load, or air conditioning? Do not deliberately repeat the conditions after a warning.
- Gauge and messages: Record the symbol, wording, and whether other lights appeared. Do not estimate engine temperature by touching the hood.
- Accompanying symptoms: Steam, a fluid patch, or power loss. If you cannot distinguish steam from smoke, move away and treat it cautiously.
- Service history: Repeated topping-up, or a recent hose or pump replacement? This gives the technician a starting point, but does not prove that the last repair caused the problem.
Where does the technician investigate?
Leakage or low level
The technician checks the cooling circuit and the cause of the loss, including possible concealed leakage. Refilling without an explanation is not enough.
Pump or thermostat
The technician assesses flow and temperature control using model-specific procedures. Removing the thermostat is not a substitute for diagnosing it.
Radiator and fans
Airflow and system operation are checked as needed. Fluid in the reservoir does not rule out a cooling fault.

Do not jump straight to a head-gasket diagnosis
No single sign described online proves every case of head-gasket failure. Ask for the test results supporting the diagnosis, what has been ruled out, and the cost and scope of work. A color change or bubbles without context are not enough to approve major dismantling.
When collecting the car, ask what caused the overheating, what was repaired, and how the system was checked afterward. Keep the coolant specification and instructions for checking its level when cold. If the warning returns, do not delay going back just because new parts were fitted.
What can maintenance help prevent?
Follow the approved coolant and inspection schedule, and watch for repeated loss between services. Choose coolant by specification, not color alone. Keep a simple dated level record if the technician requests monitoring, but do not use monitoring to justify running an overheating vehicle.

Does switching on the heater let me keep driving?
Do not treat it as permission to continue with a temperature warning. The priority is reaching a safe stopping position, switching off the engine, and seeking help.
The reservoir is full. Can I rule out overheating?
No. A full reservoir does not prove effective coolant circulation, fan operation, or the health of the rest of the circuit. The symptom needs investigation.
