Visiting the fuel station more often is not enough to judge the engine. Start with liters and distance, then compare driving conditions. If the increase persists under similar conditions, investigate rather than replacing parts by guesswork.
A fuel smell or a flashing check-engine light?
If you suspect a fuel leak, stop safely, switch off the engine, and do not restart the car before it has been inspected. A flashing check-engine light, especially with shaking or loss of power, also calls for stopping safely and seeking help. Do not wait to finish a fuel-consumption measurement exercise.

Has consumption really increased? Calculate it this way
Distinguish between the cost of a fill-up andthe quantity of fuel consumed. A higher price per liter increases what you pay even if the car uses the same amount. The remaining-range display is also an estimate that changes; do not use it as your only evidence.
- Start with a full tank. With the engine off, fill to the nozzle's first automatic shutoff without adding more fuel afterward. Record the odometer or reset the trip meter.
- Use the car normally. Note the road type, congestion, and air-conditioning use. You do not need to empty the tank or wait for the low-fuel light.
- Repeat the same method at the next fill-up. The liters added this time approximate the amount consumed over the recorded distance. Differences in filling level can affect accuracy.
- Calculate and compare more than one cycle. If there are no warning symptoms, repeat the measurement over two or three cycles in similar conditions. Add the liters and distances together for a clearer average.

What changed before consumption increased?
Prioritize possibilities according to when the problem began. The following cards help you gather useful observations; they do not diagnose a fault on their own.
More traffic, less distance
Idling consumes fuel without adding kilometers. Moving from open roads to daily congestion may increase the average without a new mechanical fault.

Harder acceleration and higher speeds
Hard acceleration and repeated braking waste fuel. Extra load and a roof box may also increase consumption.
Try:Driving smoothly within speed limits and removing unnecessary luggage, then comparing the measurements.
Air conditioning and short trips
Air conditioning adds load, and short trips in cold weather may finish before the engine reaches its more efficient operating temperature.
Record:Weather changes and journey lengths. Combine trips when convenient while preserving comfort and safe visibility.
Tire pressure
Underinflation increases rolling resistance. Use the recommended pressure for the vehicle and load, as shown on its label or in the manual, not the maximum printed on the tire.
Check:Pressure with cold tires according to the manufacturer's instructions. Repeated pressure loss requires checking for a leak.

What should you ask the technician instead of replacing parts at random?
Explain when consumption increased and mention any preceding maintenance. Provide the average consumption, road conditions, and any shaking, poor acceleration, or difficulty starting. This makes the complaint something that can be investigated.

Check the maintenance schedule and oil specifications in the owner's manual. Do not use a different viscosity merely because of a fuel-saving promise, or postpone overdue maintenance. After repair, measure again under similar conditions rather than judging only by how acceleration feels.
Important questions before paying for maintenance
Will replacing the air filter reduce fuel consumption?
It is not a guaranteed solution. According to FuelEconomy.gov, replacing a clogged air filter in modern gasoline engines with fuel injection and electronic controls generally improves acceleration without improving fuel economy in the cited tests. Does a particular percentage increase definitely mean a fault?
This guide does not give one threshold for all cars and roads. Repeated measurements under comparable conditions matter more. A fuel smell, warning light, or new symptoms change the decision even if you have not calculated the percentage increase.
Can I rely on the average-consumption display?
Use it to follow the trend, and check the period and units it represents. Compare it with a calculation between fill-ups. Do not compare a months-long average with a short trip after resetting the display.
What should I prepare before visiting a workshop?
Vehicle model and year, mileage, last maintenance, when the complaint began, and fuel quantities and distances. Also note whether the problem is constant or linked to air conditioning, traffic, or morning starts.
