Battery light while driving: inspect the charging system

The battery symbol with the engine running may indicate a charging fault; buying a new battery alone may not address the cause.

Stop safely and read the vehicle instructions

The engine may stop when the available electrical energy is depleted. With overheating, heavy steering or a burning smell, do not continue driving; seek assistance.

What does this light mean?

The indicator with plus and minus signs monitors the charging system in combustion-engine vehicles. Appearing before the engine starts may be normal; remaining on afterwards or appearing while driving requires action.

The light appeared while the engine was running

Note your location and contact roadside assistance for guidance. There is no guaranteed distance you can travel on the remaining charge.

The vehicle will not start

Avoid repeated attempts. Battery and charging tests help identify the next step; jump-start only using the method permitted by the vehicle manual.

Practical steps before inspection

  1. Record whether the light appeared alone or with overheating, belt noise or a change in lighting.
  2. Switch off unnecessary equipment when needed, while keeping lights, wipers and everything required for safety operating.
  3. Request checks of the charging system, connections and battery together. Do not disconnect a battery terminal with the engine running to test the alternator.

A question that changes the decision

Does the same explanation apply to an electric vehicle?

Not completely. A 12-volt battery warning differs from traction-battery charge level and high-voltage system warnings. Consult the model manual and do not touch high-voltage components.
