Do not continue with a persistent brake warning

What does this light mean?
The symbol may be a circle containing an exclamation mark or the word BRAKE. Some vehicles use one light for the parking brake and brake-system faults, while others use separate indicators.
It disappears after releasing the parking brake
It may be a normal operating indicator. Check the display text, and do not ignore noise, resistance to movement or a change in braking.
It remains illuminated or appears with ABS
Do not treat it as an isolated ABS fault. Combined warnings, a sinking pedal or pulling during braking change the urgency.
Practical steps before inspection
- Stop in a safe place before reading messages or checking any fluid level.
- Tell the specialist about pedal feel, leaks and recent brake servicing. Do not perform an emergency-braking test to confirm the problem.
- Topping up brake fluid does not repair the cause; the reason for the loss must be identified and the system checked using the correct specification.
A question that changes the decision
Does the light mean immediate brake-pad replacement?
No. Some models have a separate pad-wear warning. The symbol and text matter more than guessing a component name.
