Stop safely at an overheating warning
Follow the vehicle message and manual instructions about switching off the engine. With steam or a visible leak, stop the engine and seek assistance; do not open the hot cap.
What does this light mean?
A thermometer above waves usually relates to coolant. Depending on the system, the warning may indicate high temperature or low level; the responsible component cannot be identified from the symbol alone.
A red warning or gauge in the hot zone
Do not try to reach the workshop while allowing overheating to continue. Do not add cold fluid to an extremely hot system or approach steam.
Blue cold-engine indicator
Some vehicles use this to indicate that normal operating temperature has not yet been reached. It is not an overheating warning, but check the manual for its exact meaning.
Practical steps before inspection
- Photograph the message after stopping and identify whether the problem began in traffic, on a highway or with the air conditioning running.
- Wait until the system has cooled completely before performing any check permitted by the manual. Do not rely on a fixed number of minutes.
- Request investigation of the temperature cause, coolant level and leaks; the gauge returning to normal does not establish that the fault has been repaired.
A question that changes the decision
Is turning on the heater enough to solve the problem?
Do not rely on it as a repair or permission to continue the journey. A temperature warning requires assessment of the cause and the stopping procedure specified for your vehicle.
