Electric or hybrid? Start with your daily routine

Compare charging, distance and journey flexibility without assuming one winner for every driver.

Identify the powertrain

An electric vehicle uses a battery charged from an external supply. A conventional hybrid combines an internal combustion engine with an electric system and generally does not plug into a charger. A plug-in hybrid is a separate category: account for its electricity and fuel use separately. Check the exact version offered; the model name alone is not enough.

Test a typical week

Write down your longest daily trip, parking location and available charging time. A nearby station is not sufficient evidence: check access, connector compatibility, payment and opening hours. Plan for a day when your usual charger is unavailable before deciding that an electric vehicle fits your routine.

Use one market and one ownership period

Use the local version’s price and the energy tariff you will actually pay. Include insurance, maintenance and expected resale value. Energy savings alone do not necessarily recover a higher purchase price. A frequent driver may reach a different conclusion from someone covering short distances.

Make the test drive useful

Try a route close to your normal use. Check controls, luggage space and energy information. Request written details of the warranty, servicing requirements and included charging equipment. Record unanswered questions rather than assigning unsupported scores.
