Corolla or Elantra: which uses less fuel in this test?
This is a specific comparison of two US-market 2022 versions from the EPA/DOE guide. The selected Elantra records lower consumption in the combined test; the result does not cover every engine, trim or market.
The two versions being compared
Toyota Corolla 2022 — United States
1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a continuously variable transmission coded AV in the guide. The comparison excludes the hybrid, hatchback and 2.0-litre engine.
Hyundai Elantra 2022 — United States
2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, AV-S1 transmission, and the row with combined consumption of 35 MPG without the SS mark. Another row lists 37 MPG with the SS mark; we have not mixed them.

What does the difference mean for your budget?
To convert US MPG: litres/100 km = 235.214583 ÷ MPG. At a hypothetical 20,000 km per year, the calculated difference is about 81 litres using unrounded values. Multiply this difference by the price you pay per litre to estimate the impact, then compare it with the purchase, maintenance and insurance costs of your offers.
The distance is an example, not an assumed average for your use. Driving less reduces the impact of the difference; a large purchase-price gap cannot be resolved by fuel consumption alone. Do not treat the guide's annual dollar cost as a current Egyptian or Gulf fuel bill.
Will the result repeat on your roads?
A standardised test makes the reference comparison fairer but does not guarantee identical daily-driving figures. To assess the two vehicles in front of you, record distance and fuel added over several fills, along with journey type, load and air-conditioning use. Compare similar periods of use rather than relying on a photograph of an instantaneous consumption display.
If your goal is economy
Start with the actual version and its matching test figure, then calculate the difference over your mileage. In this specific comparison, the Elantra leads numerically.
If your vehicle suddenly uses more fuel
Compare the vehicle with itself before and after the increase. A difference from an advertised figure does not identify a fault or justify immediately replacing a sensor or cleaning a component.

No. The versions, years and market are specified above. Do not transfer these figures to 1.6-litre engines or other models without a matching reference.
